The character limit for SMS messaging is technically 160 characters per message. However, if you send more than 160 characters, then your message will be broken down into individual SMS messages (called segments) of 153 characters before being sent to the recipient’s handset. Moreover, if you use certain types of characters, that limit is then reduced to fit into your message. In this article we explain the SMS character count in detail.
The reason SMS messages have a character limit is that they were originally intended to contain 7-bit characters included in the GSM alphabet in order to be able to fit into other signaling protocols. When you send non-GSM alphabet (e.g. á, í, ó), characters, your message has to be sent using the UCS-2 encoding, which in turn sets your character limit to 70 characters and then segments of 64 characters. To ensure your total length we provide a character counter prior to sending campaigns. In the case of MMS messages, in LeadWire users have up to 800 characters, regardless of special characters.
Please Note: Your message character’s count will directly affect your monthly plan consumption. You can see this consumption from anywhere in LeadWire on the top right of your screen.
In our campaign module, LeadWire will give you a preview of how many messages will be sent per contact as you write your content. What’s more, in the campaign confirmation pop-up, LeadWire will give you the Total Estimated Messages to be consumed by the campaign. This number takes into account the number of contacts in the audiences you chose and the messages per contact resulting from your content.
